The "Grate" Altus Spelling Bee will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 2, at the Altus High School Library, 219 N. Park Lane. The cost is $100 per team made of 2-3 people. No limit on number of teams per organization. The entry forms must be turned in by Friday, March 25. For more information or for an entry form contact the Great Plains Literacy Council at 477-2890 for more information.

The Great Plains Literacy Council has scheduled a Training Workshop for 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, March 1, 2 and 3. The workshop will allow volunteers to be trained as tutors, so that they may tutor adult learners in their community who are struggling with literacy. Consider changing someone's life for good and be a volunteer! Anyone interested in being involved should contact the Altus Public Library at 477-2890.

That Altus Band Parents are selling World's Finest Chocolate Solid Milk Chocolate Easter Bunnies, as well as WFC candy bars in the flavors of caramel, crisp and milk chocolate with almonds. The candy bars come with a $2 Pizza Hut coupon. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund the Band Parents' many yearly projects and support for the activities of That Altus Band students. A fund has been set up for Larry Edwards at People's State Bank in Blair. The fund has been set up to help with funeral expenses and medical bills. For more personal donations contact Peggy Edwards at 563-9240.

Contributions for a Memory Book for Frances Herron are now being accepted. Former students, friends, and neighbors are urged to contribute to the Memory Book which will be presented to Mrs. Herron as she is honored during National Women's History Month by the Western Trail Historical Society. Contributions of a humorous anecdote, funny story, or fond remembrance may be sent to muswespr@ok-history.mus.ok.us or mailed to the Museum of the Western Prairie, 1100 Memorial Drive, Altus, OK 73521. The deadline for contributions is March 4.

Volunteer Drivers are needed to drive the D.A.V. van to the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City. For more information or to volunteer call 477-0107.

S.W. Community Action Senior meal program is in need of volunteers to deliver meals. Drivers are needed for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. For more information call the Wilson Center at 482-1290.

Applications for Cadet Lawman Academy are now available at the local Elks Lodge. This is a program for juniors in high school who are interested in a career in law enforcement. The students must be in the top 50% of the class. Deadline for submitting applications is April 1.

Board of Directors of Southwest will have a meeting Thursday at the Hollis meal site, 901 E. Vivian, in Hollis. Head Start Governance training will start at 5:45 p.m. with the board meeting to begin at 7 p.m. A light supper will be served. There will be an agency bus prepared to leave at 5 p.m. from the transit warehouse, 1401 E. Ridgecrest, and from the Mangum meal site, 219 S. Oklahoma, in Mangum.

The Altus Junior High PAWS will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria.

The Jackson County Republican party will hold the County Convention at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Altus Best Western Hotel. All registered Jackson County Republicans are highly encouraged to attend. County officers will be elected as well as delegates to the state convention.

Chapter CM of PEO will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday in the home of Barbara Brinkman, with Betty Fox as co-hostess.

The Altus Masonic Family will host a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 116 E. Cypress. The prices will be - brisket, $6; chicken, $6; ribs, $6; slabs, $15.

The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge will conduct "Stars Over the Wichitas" interpretive programs on March 4 and 5. The public is invited to participate in an evening with the stars, where they will study major constellations and other heavenly bodies with assistance from an amateur astronomer. Bring your own optics, or view the night skies through a 13" Dobsonian telescope. Reservations for the program are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by telephoning the Refuge weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28. That Altus Band Parents is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner and silent auction starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Altus High School Cafeteria. The Altus High School Jazz Band will provide entertainment. The Tickets are $6 per plate and will not be available at the door. For more information call AHS band room at 481-2164 or 482-4383. All proceeds will go toward offsetting the band's annual spring trip cost.

The Southwest Oklahoma chapter of the American Red Cross will be having its annual "Easter Orchid Sales Fundraiser" again this year. Orchids are only $7 each and companies, organizations and others may purchase 30 orchids for a discounted price of $150. All orders must be in by noon Thursday, March 10. Orchids can be picked up at the chapter (905 N. Willard) on Wednesday, March 23 (pending UPS delivery). For questions, call the office at 482-5303. They say the flowers are beautiful and really last.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will be conducting Historical Sites of the Wichitas Tours in March. These tours will be offered on the following Saturday afternoons: March 12, 19 and 26. Reservation are required and are taken on a first-come, first-served basis from 8 am. to 4:30 p.m., weekdays beginning Monday, March 7. Children must at least 8 years old to participate. There will be a $3 per person reservation fee collected at the time of check-in. A night of bluegrass and gospel music will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Altus City Auditorium. Tickets will be $6 at the door and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Community Cupboard. Those performing will be Wichita Mountain Bluegrass (Bob Johnston, Robert and Elana Johnston, David Johnston, Betty Callen and Steve Grayson) and Cold Creek (Rena Brannon, Lonnie Lake, John and Sandy Steen, Brian Quam, Eddy Biddy).
