Altus - This past weekend, the City of Altus hosted its 2nd Annual Southwestern Oklahoma Regional Fire School held November 3 and 4 at the Southwest Technology Center. The Altus Fire/Rescue was the host department that supported this very successful weekend. With the assistance of Altus Fire Chief Jerry Abbott and the Altus Fire Department, the Southwestern Regional Fire School culminated with two full days of beneficial training being delivered to firefighters and EMT’s from all over the state encompassing over 24 departments. The weekend ended with over 107 certificates of completion of training being presented.
The training took place with the assistance of Southwest Technology Center, providing the location and fuel that was required to conduct one of the many different classes offered. The event brought Oklahoma State University Fire Service Instructors from all over Oklahoma to Altus to deliver a vast array of fire service training. This year’s conference also included classes for EMS professionals. The courses offered consisted of OSBN/Meth Labs, OSBI/Crime Scene, Wildland Rehab, Wildland Fire Origin Recognition, Pump Operations and FLAG/LPG. “We were very fortunate to once again bring necessary training to Southwest Oklahoma. Over 22 of departments in South West Oklahoma alone were able to benefit from these courses at little to no cost to their department” says Altus Fire Chief Jerry Abbott.
According to Gary Davis, OSU-FST Rural Training Specialist for the SW Region, the event was the largest turn out for the OSU-Fire Service Training division in Western Oklahoma this year. Davis says “This could not have happened without the Altus Fire Department and the Southwest Technology Center’s support and desire to help in providing training for the safety and improvement of skills for our Firefighters and First Responders of this state.”
