Representatives of the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) were here in Altus on Monday, June 11 to obtain their own samples of the City’s drinking water. According to Chief of Operations, Bob Stephenson, the DEQ representatives looked at lab samples and said Altus has the manganese problem “under control”.

Stephenson said that certain areas will be seeing relief from the brownish water before others. Areas that have a high demand for water and those with plastic pipes will have clear water before those areas with iron pipes or those using little water output. The manganese deposits can get stuck in the minute crannies in iron pipe, taking longer to wash out.

Stephenson added, “The Altus City Council recognizes that the City’s water infrastructure needs some rehabilitation and rebuilding.”

It has long been a known fact that Altus's water infrastructure has been in need of repair, so it's nothing new that Mr. Stephenson is saying. The bigger question is why hasn't it been done yet? The city has, in my opnion, wasted alot of money on things that were a lower priority than the water infrastructure repairs that are needed. The city hired a Business Develpment Director at a large cost that included $20,000 to move him and his family hear from overseas along with an $80,000 annual salary. As I look around the city I haven't seen any new bussinesses spring up as a result of the creation of this new position. We still have empty store fronts all over the city to include two of the largest structures, the old United store in Bunker Hill Shopping Center and the old Ford dealership building on Grady. I would think that the water issue would be the #1 priority and the citizens of Altus should demand that it be.
