Finishing touches under way at AHS

Construction workers were busy this week installing the arches that will lead from the student parking lot into the Altus High School’s new courtyard.

Students and teachers have already occupied the renovated classrooms in the south and west wings of the school, which were the last to be completed. A few finishing touches remain, though, before the two-year AHS construction and renovation project can be called ‘complete.’

When the masonry work on the archway is finished, workers will pour concrete from the archway to the student parking lot. They will also install a pull-down gate and doorways under the walkway that serves as the entrance into the courtyard. Inside the courtyard, brickwork lattice fences will be installed to hide the air conditioning units, and rails will be put around the new stage. Outdoor furniture is on order for the courtyard, and should be here soon, as well.

Inside the school, while the classrooms and offices are in use, the new library still awaits its custom shelving and furniture. Once that arrives, the books will be moved from the old library building.

School officials are in hopes that all of the final touches will be in place by mid-September, and they plan to open up the newly constructed Altus High School for a public tour/open house when the project is complete.
