The inception of Coats for Kids began when Altus Fire/Rescue Department assisted Salvation Army with distribution of holiday gifts. When firefighters repeatedly heard the need for children’s coats, they rallied together to ensure that no child would be left without the warmth of winter clothing. With our 11th year now underway for Jackson County and winter air moving in, your community support is needed.

In 2008, with the help of Altus businesses and community, Altus Fire/Rescue Department and Salvation Army distributed over 320 new coats to children of qualifying Jackson County families to be opened Christmas morning. In addition, countless families received gently-used coats donated by residents and cleaned by Altus Laundry & Cleaners. In fact, there were so many donated gently-used coats, that Salvation Army has enough used coats for this year.

This year, the Coats for Kids Program is requesting monetary donations to ensure children in need receive a new coat. Chief Wheeler says, “With monetary donations, the Coats for Kids Program can stretch the dollar with assistance from local businesses that provide discounts to our Program”. Donations are accepted at both fire departments until December 15th or call Altus Fire/Rescue for donation pick-up. For more information you may contact the Fire Chief’s office at 481-2231.

Making a difference in the life of a child is an amazing gift. Join Altus Fire/Rescue Department, Salvation Army, and this community to ensure that children in Southwest Oklahoma have the life-saving gift of warmth this Christmas.
