Freezing drizzle falling across Oklahoma as left roadways slick, and by 8:30 a.m. today, Oklahoma Highway Patrol were working 14 accidents around Altus.
At 7:23 a.m. today the Oklahoma Highway Patrol closed Hwy 44 and 44A at the Quartz Mountain area due to a severe multi-vehicle accident. Interstate 40 was also shut down between Clinton and Elk City because of numerous accidents.
Slick and hazardous roadway conditions were said to be the cause, and OHP was cautioning everyone to stay off the highways if at all possible.
OHP'’s George Dickerson said ice is forming over culverts, low-lying areas and on overpasses. Conditions are so bad that even the Oklahoma Department of Transportation had two trucks crash near the Quartz Mountain State Lodge this morning.
"We are also starting to get a lot calls out of Greer County," Dickerson said. Cars were also reported in the ditch near Olustee this morning.
US 62 at mile marker 52 was closed at 4:31 a.m. today due to a rollover accident involving a semi. The outside lane was later reopened and Dickerson said there were no injuries reported from this accident.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory until 9 a.m. today — then temperatures were predicted to rise to the upper 30s in northeastern Oklahoma to the mid 50s in the southwest.
Driving conditions were not hazardous this morning within the Altus city limits, with only light drizzle and wet roadways reported.
However, similar highway conditions are expected tomorrow, so motorists are again urged to take extreme caution and allow extra time for slower driving.
