District Attorney John Wampler announced Friday that the Assistant Police Chief in Hollis was arrested on Thursday. The arrest was following an investigation by agents of the District Three DA Drug Task Force into allegations of sexual assault on a 28-year-old female inmate in the Harmon County jail.

Arrested was Jayson Scott Vest, 34, who is being held in the Jackson County jail on a bond of $250,000.

According to Wampler, the assault allegedly occurred on Wednesday evening, Jan. 16 in the Chief’s office when Vest removed the inmate from her cell to allegedly question her about drug activity in the county.

The Hollis Police Department and the Harmon County Sheriff’s Department are both housed in the same building where the joint City/County jail is located.

According to the victim, Vest sexually assaulted her and they had intercourse.

Vest is expected to be arraigned next Tuesday before Harmon County Associate District Judge Mike Warren. Wampler said he expects to charge the officer with Rape of an Inmate, which if convicted, is punishable by 1 to 15 years in prison.

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
