Hollis, Tipton and Frederick begin the post high school football season on Friday.

Hollis will host Okeene, Tipton will entertain Buffalo while Frederick will be at home against Marietta all in first round playoff games.

Okeene at Hollis

Class A

7:30 p.m.

Coach Reade Box’s Tigers are in the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Hollis’ flex bone offense has riddled defenses for 371 points in the the 10 game regular season. The Tigers defense has played well also yielding an average of 10 points per game.

The Tigers brings an 8-1 record into the contest. Their lone loss was a seven point setback at the hands of third ranked Thomas.

After being shunned by the pollsters for most of the season, Hollis is ranked ninth in the Class A.

Okeene (6-4) has averaged 33 points a game while yielding 23 points per outing.

The winner will play the Ringling-Minco winner next week.

Marietta at Tipton

Class C

7:30 p.m.

In Tillman County, you would be hard pressed to find a team that has dominated its schedule the way the Tipton Tigers have this season.

In the 10 games, the Tigers rolled up 513 points and allowed only eight points. The lone score Tipton gave up was to to a 1-8 Duke squad.

In talking about the defense, Tipton Head Coach Jim Kerbo said, “That’s the key. A lot of our offense is because of our defense. They read their keys and we’ve tackled well. I’m so pleased the way they (the players) have bought into our system.”

Offensively the ringleader is senior running back Josh Torres who is nearing the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season. Torres’ stats would be even better but his number of carries have been limited due to the lopsided scoring of all of the Tigers games. Kerbo has lifted Torres to allow the younger players an opportunity to play.

It has been a balanced attack as three others have rushed for 500 to 700 yards on the year.

Buffalo comes into the game with a 7-3 season record. They have scored 265 points while yielding 320 points on the season.

“They are a big, physical team and they have some skilled players,” Kerbo said. “They have a good quarterback and two backs that can run.”

Tipton, the number one ranked team in Class C, is the favorite by many to walk away with the gold ball. Kerbo was asked if that bothers him.

“It does a little bit. It gives other teams extra incentive. It is what it is, we can’t change it. We just need to play one game at a time and play hard every time.”

If Tipton wins it would put them into the second round of the playoffs against Wesleyan Christian-Southwest Covenant first round winner. The Tigers would also host that game.

Marietta at Frederick

Class 2A, first round

7:30 p.m.

But just down the road a Frederick Bomber team has also been a force.

The unbeaten Bombers averaged 64.3 points a game and allowed an average of 10.6 points.

Marietta comes into the game with a 4-6 season mark.

Playoff notes: Hollis native and former Hollis Coach Milton Cooper is having big success at Madill.

Cooper, in his second year at Madill, directed the Wildcats to a 10-0 season.

They will play Oklahoma City Star Spencer in the first round.
