The Altus Municipal Authority (AMA) and the City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Council Chambers. In the AMA, among normal business practices and other items, the trustees will discuss seeking Request For Proposals (RFPs)for potential contract services for “flatbed” trash pick up.

During the executive session in the AMA, the trustees will discuss the purchase of 18,000 square feet of the former Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Dealership at 1210 N. Grady for use as the Altus Senior Citizens Center. This would be the north 135 feet of that facility.

In Council, the Council members will receive comments from Cynthia Armstrong from the Humane Society and other concerned citizens regarding euthanasia options for animals at the Altus Animal Shelter. Currently, the Altus Animal Shelter uses carbon monoxide which is more expensive, painful and is a dangerous substance for those who work at the shelter. Bill Reed has sent material to the Council asking them to consider changing this antiquated method to injecting sodium pentobarbital, which produces a painless death.

In addition to normal business items, the Council may vote on approving the following employee positions: a part-time maintenance worker for the Greens of Altus Golf Course, a full-time meter reader, and a full-time person in a new accounting position. Council will review progress on the abatement of public nuisances at 1414 E. Cypress.

In Council executive session they will discuss the annual evaluation for the Sanitation Superintendent, and the water/Sewer Maintenance Superintendent. They will also discuss a negotiation update from the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #120. In open session, Council may vote to approve the Collective Bargaining Agreement and authorize the mayor and City Clerk to sign this agreement between the FOP and the City of Altus. Other items may also be considered in open session.

After any new business, and Mayor’s appointments, the City Administrator, Council and Mayor may make comments before adjournment.
