Mission on Wheels is a blur of activity preparing for fall and winter. On Wednesday, Oct. 31, they’ll be giving out fruit and nuts from 4 to 6 p.m. for those who stop by the Mission at 213 W. Walnut. They’ll also be serving Hallelujah stew for the holiday.
Mission on Wheels (MOW) distributes electric heaters in the autumn to the elderly. Last year they raised funds for 20 heaters and now have a goal for 22 heaters. To raise funds, they’ll be having another bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 8 a.m. in front of Wal-Mart. They hope they’ll have enough donations of baked goods that they can help supply holiday treats and raise these funds.
MOW is an ongoing ministry. Even if the mission isn’t open certain days, if people call Director Edna Douglas, she and her staff of volunteers come to help. In addition to distributing clothing and household items to those in need in Altus, they also help people from surrounding towns. Sometimes they even have calls from those in North Texas. When you donate goods, services and money to MOW, it goes a long way to provide for others.
The Mission provides many things for the children of Altus. In addition to the school supply giveaway, they maintain school supplies so students need not run out. They sponsor one of the largest giveaways of infants and children’s clothing. They also refer clients to Pathways Pregnancy Resource Center for newborn items through Pathways’ Earn While You Learn Program.
The Mission needs volunteers and wishes to be able to feed some that don’t have their own resources. If you have imperishable food that you wish to donate, they’d be glad to distribute it. First United Methodist Church provided bottled water to the Mission for the summer and many people came by to get a cold drink of water in Jesus’ name.
MOW always has a call out for men’s jeans, as hardworking clients come to get their work pants at the Mission. Winter clothing and shoes for all ages and winter bedding is needed now as the weather has definitely changed.
Come see the MOW facility at 213 W. Walnut in Altus. Donation times are Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by special arrangement. Free giveaways are scheduled Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m., or by arrangement. Call Edna Douglas at 580-649-8620, for “When I was naked, ye clothed me.” Matthew 25:36a.
