The Altus School Board was realigned last night with the addition of member Darrell Moss and new officers David Walker and Phil Marcha.

Moss was welcomed into the board after signing the oath of office and loyalty oath. Gary Winsett, board president, passed the gavel on to Walker because his four years as board member qualified him for president. Marcha's three years of service earned him vice president.

During the executive session, the members discussed reemployment of the assistant superintendent, directors, principals and teachers and approved them with a vote during open session.

The renovation of the Altus Middle School concession stand was also approved by the board. PTO will fund the project that will cost $1,312.11.

The 04-05 school year will see the installation of all-day kindergarten classes at Rivers Elementary.

"We have the money to do it at all sites, but we don't have the space to do it at all sites," Superintendent Bob Drury said. "We have the space inside the building at Rivers, and we've had a request by the military community to provide this."

Diane Chowning, homeless liaison, and Candy Newton, assistant liaison, reported on the success of the Homeless Grant that enables them to provide homeless children with such things as vaccines, supplies and tutoring in order for them to function and blend in with other students. Chowning mentioned that 15 children are receiving such services.

"Everywhere we go, somebody says, 'I know a family that's having these problems' or 'I know a child,'" Chowning said. "I've been surprised at how many we have at the high school that are living on their own, trying to make it on their own. We're here to support them how ever we can."

A "working lunch" was scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 24 at which facilities will be reviewed regarding BRAC requirements and reconfiguration.

The ADA compliance item regarding the Altus High School stadium was tabled due to a possible mildew problem underneath the stadium where restroom installation was being considered.

The meeting wrapped up with the vote to add a new board policy prohibiting the use of public funds, property, time and personnel to influence board elections.
