State lawmakers said this week that despite recent rumors that the reformatory in Granite would be closed, they have no plans for such action.
Rumblings of the prison closing came after the facility was listed among three recommended for demolition in a report by a consultant group hired by the Legislature to examine the state’s prisons.
Representatives said earlier this week that closing Granite would work against lawmakers’ goals because it would decrease the department’s inmate capacity at a time when extra space for inmates is crucial.

If the matter comes to fruition, it could create 200 or more jobs for the area.
