Western sweeps conference twinbill from Carl Albert

POTEAU - The Western Oklahoma State College Pioneers got their conference baseball season off to a good start Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Carl Albert Junior College.

The Pioneers got a pair of good pitching performances from Erlin Santos and Skyluar Neal in the doubleheader. Western won the first game 3-1 and routed Carl Albert 10-0 in the nightcap.

Western s and Carl Albert had no shortage of baserunners on Saturday, but it was the Pioneers that was able to take advantage, pulling out a 3-1 win at Poteau,Ok.

Carl Albert had six hits compared with Western’s five, but Carl Albert stranded eight runners on base.

Sherman Lacrus was solid at the plate for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers. Lacrus went 1-3, including a solo homer in the first inning.

Erlin Santos worked out of three tricky spots for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers. He pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run on six hits.

Michael Cruz, Randy Joung, Elvis Rodriguez, and Francisco Rosario all collected hits for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers.

Santos was strong on the mound, as he threw strikes on 61 of his 104 pitches. He struck out seven and walked two.

The top of the first saw Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers take an early lead, 1-0. A solo home run by Lacrus started the inning off.

Carl Albert scored its only run of the game on an RBI single by Jacob Carter in the second inning.

The game’s last lead went to Western thanks to a fourth inning rally that saw one run cross the plate on a sacrifice fly by Cruz.

An awesome effort by Hazael Wessin hoisted Westernto a 10-0 win in six innings over Carl Albert on Friday at Poteau, OK.

Wessin hit two home runs for Pioneers. Wessin went 2-2 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wessin homered in the second and fourth innings.

Western blew out Carl Albert thanks to 14 hits, including eight extra base hits. The Pioneers scored four runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Cesar Figuereo, an RBI triple by Francisco Rosario, an RBI double by Tony Kelly, and a sacrifice fly by Esteban Paula.

Carl Albert had no answer for Skyluar Neal, who cruised on the rubber. Carl Albert managed just three hits off of the southpaw pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out three during his five innings of work.

Figuereo threw one inning of scoreless ball for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers.

Michael Cruz, Figuereo, Randy Joung, Kelly, Shawn McAndrews, Elvis Rodriguez, Rosario, and Wessin each got hits for Western . Rodriguez led the team with three hits.

The lead stayed with the Pioneers after the first, when it scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Figuereo.

Western pushed one run across in each of the second, fourth and sixth. In the second, Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers scored on a solo home run by Wessin.

The Pioneers tacked on another two runs in the third. A single by Joung ignited the offense, bringing home Cruz. That was followed up by a sacrifice fly by Figuereo that scored Joung.

Western is now 25-6 on the season and they played Carl Albert in a doubleheader on Saturday.
