Altus Air Force Base, Western Oklahoma State College, Southwest Technology Center, Altus Public Schools officials, and area industry representatives met on Thursday in the Higher Learning Center at Western to form a cooperative working group dedicated to raising public awareness and creating supportive programs for school age students looking towards careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Attendees determined that children starting as early as elementary school and continuing on to high school would benefit from innovative curriculum designed to enhance their skills in the STEM disciplines. Initial planning determined the need for interactive events that assist educators, students and parents.

A schedule of events for 2013 will be publicized as the group coordinates across agencies to organize STEM motivational events, career days and project presentations.
