Shortly before 4:00 a.m. on 12-24-12, Altus police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Motel 6, 2515 East Broadway. The victim gave police a detailed description of the suspect and told police the suspect pointed a black handgun at him and demanded money. He also told police he was knocked to the ground before the suspect took money from the cash register.

Investigators processed evidence at the crime scene and conducted interviews with the clerk, Cameron Hicks. Investigators at the crime scene suspected the reported crime may have been staged because of the victims initial statements.

On 12-28-12, Hicks confessed to investigators that a known associate, with a history of drug use, came into the motel and convinced Hicks to hand over the money and then tell police he had been robbed. Money from the register and safe were taken along with a lap top computer and a carry bag, as an element of the story for police.

The associate of Hicks, Gabriel Valdez, was interviewed on 1-7-13 and confessed to investigators. Valdez told investigators that Hicks was givens item of value in exchange for money. Valdez also stated he was tricked out of his share of the money. 21 yr. old Gabriel Valdez was booked into the Jackson County Jail on charges of Grand Larceny and Conspiracy.

A warrant request for the arrest of 19 yr.old Cameron Hicks has been submitted to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for charges of Grand Larceny, Conspiracy and Filing a False Police Report.
