Christmas began in the fall this year at the Plantation Village Assisted Living Center as residents worked with the staff and volunteer Dianna Thompson (whose mother was a resident there at the time) on a special project called : BEARS and BLANKETS. The ladies made soft cuddly blankets and tiny little stuffed bears to give to the Pathways Pregnancy Center. Some of the ladies crocheted blankets, some tied fringed blankets and stuffed bears for this project over several months. Blankets and bears were made in many different colors and styles, but all with love in their hearts and hands. Ms. Thompson who previously had been a nursing home administrator said, “One of the things I learned about working with the elderly is that they love to do things for other people. They are from a generation of working and giving and volunteering and just because they can no longer live at home doesn’t mean they have lost these instincts. So by encouraging my own mother to get back into her crocheting she had done for so many years, I found there were other ladies there who also liked to make things, so I asked them if they would be interested in this project and boy did they go after it! They put in countless hours making dozens of blankets and little bears for this project and have been anxiously awaiting Christmas so they could give them as a gift to Pathways.” Do you like to do things like this? There is a group of folks at every assisted living and nursing home in this town who would love for you to share your talents with them and help them make things to give away to help someone else. Call any administrator of the local facilities and they will invite you in with open arms.
