According to, Wayne Cain, Jackson County Emergency Management Director. Jackson County Commissioners have teamed with Southwest Enterprises on recycling. The county has set up recycling containers in areas through-out the court house to collect paper, magazines, newspaper and plastic. This effort will enhance the capabilities and funding for the Southwest Enterprises operation.
This will be a win-win initiative for both entities. Recycled materials will be sorted and sold by Southwest Enterprises to compensate funding for their organization. For the County, it means less trash going to the landfill, resulting in lower taxpayer cost for disposal and is extremely beneficial in helping reduce reusable waste materials being added to our landfill.
Mrs. Debby Tunning, Southwest Enterprises Director stated that, Southwest Enterprises, a part of Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group, is the local vocational training program for adults with disabilities. The workshop does a wide range of vocational activities from selling jewelry and mini cotton bales that the participants make to custodial and lawn care contracts. A long standing activity has been the collection of items for recycling. In the past, this has been limited to paper and cans. Recently a recycler for cardboard, magazines and phone books has been contacted and the center is ready to expand the recycling program to include these items. Recycling may be dropped off at the workshop at 2208 Enterprise Drive, or call 477-0701 to arrange for a pick-up.
The items that Southwest Enterprises can recycle are any type of paper, including magazines or glossy items, white paper, colored paper, newspaper and phone books, aluminum cans, cardboard and plastics.
Cain stated recycling our reusable materials could be a critical asset to our community and county . Imagine if we could extend the life of the existing landfill for another 30 to 40 years, how much land, cost and future cost, for clean-up we could save. This relates to numerous monetary savings that could be utilized for other purposes within our communities/county. We would like to encourage everyone to help in this effort.
