It’s time to clean up Altus!

The second Altus city-wide cleanup event is set for tomorrow, Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the Altus Community Center on the east side of the building between 8 and 9 a.m. to register, and pick up trash bags and safety vests. They will return with their trash bags before noon to sign out. A roll-off will be provided by the City of Altus and Raymond Moody.

Goodwill Industries will have a 26-foot-long truck in the parking lot next to the community center and will take furniture, washers, dryers, refrigerators, mattresses, toys, bicycles, computers and more. Their motto is “Goodwill not Landfill.”

Also, Goodwill Industries is having Customer Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their main store located at 214 North Main Street from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. They will have hot dogs, sodas, and baked goods for a minimal fee. If you donate at the Community Center, you receive a ticket for a free hot dog and drink. They will also be giving away three major prizes: 1st Place, a Kindle Fire; 2nd Place, a $100 VISA Gift Card; and 3rd Place, a $50 Goodwill Gift Card. If you can’t take your items to the Goodwill store or truck, call 580-482-8194 and they will schedule a pickup for you.

Goals of the Clean Up group include keeping Altus looking as good as possible and keeping trash out of the landfill and main waterways in the area.

All businesses along the major thoroughfares have been notified of the clean-up efforts and are asked to clean up areas in front, back and sides if their buildings.

This is a cooperative effort between the Altus Chamber of Commerce, City of Altus, Main Street Altus, Altus AFB, Altus Rotary, Altus Lions, Altus Kiwanis Club, Jackson County Health Action Team – Nutrition and Fitness Task Force, Western Oklahoma State College, Southwest Technology Center , Altus Realtors, OSU Extension Center – 4H Clubs, Boy Scouts, area churches, McDonald’s and hopefully many other businesses. The Altus Times, KEYB and KWHW radio stations are also helping, as well as and many other individuals. Anyone interested in joining this effort is asked to call the Altus Chamber of Commerce at 580-482-0210 to sign up.

* NOTE: Meet at the Altus Community Center on the east side.

Once again the NCAA botched it
I have to laugh at the NCAA simply because they are so comical in their decision making. This will not be the first time I have criticized the NCAA for some of the decisions they have made in the past and certainly won’t be the last. And by the way I’m not the only one that taking that stand wit...
