SWTC Foundation awards nearly $95,000 in scholarships

Since the first two scholarships of $500 each were presented in 2001, the Southwest Technology Center Foundation has awarded nearly $95,000 in scholarships to deserving adult students enrolled in full time programs. Scholarship amounts have ranged from $100 to $1,400.

Recently, Phil Carson, Foundation President, presented thirteen scholarships totaling $5,000. Among the recipients are Ray Alcorta, Kristen Arles, Suzette Brown, Karin Calkins, Michelle Carnes, Shanda Fesmire, Carla Martinez, Shawn Moriarity, Tanna Morren, Edi Ortega, Kenneth Robinson, Maria Vaca, Lilliana Verdejo.

The sole purpose of the Foundation is to support students through the scholarship program.

Each summer a golf tournament is conducted as the SWTC foundation’s only fundraiser, and for the past several years over $10,000 have been raised at this event. The Elk’s Club has also made it possible to make for scholarships available to the SWTC students by donating over $150,000 to adults making progress in a career certification or associate’s degree.

Recently, the Altus High School class of ’71 donated $75 to the SWTC Foundation in honor of fellow classmate, Carl Perry, the father of Donnie and Charlotte Perry.

The second annual Elk’s Club scholarship was awarded to Shawn Moriarity out of the Aviation and Aerospace Technology program.

The foundation board meets twice yearly to conduct business. Officers include Phil Carson, president, Bill Wilson, vice president and Dr. John Thomas, secretary/treasurer.

Once again the NCAA botched it
I have to laugh at the NCAA simply because they are so comical in their decision making. This will not be the first time I have criticized the NCAA for some of the decisions they have made in the past and certainly won’t be the last. And by the way I’m not the only one that taking that stand wit...
