Altus Schools to hold One-Stop Enrollment, Shot Clinic Friday

Enrolling a child in a new school can be a pain. Lines at enrollment can be long, there are forms to fill out, and if your family has children in more than one school – elementary, junior, and high school – it can mean hauling the kids around from one school to another.

But, for parents of students new to any of the eight Altus Public School campuses or the local Head Start locations, on August 3, enrollment is all in one spot – the Altus High School Cafeteria, across from the Altus City Park. There will even be free food, free immunizations needed for school, as well as entertainment for the kids.

“We really wanted to take the pain out of enrolling new students,” said Valerie Roberts, director of public relations for Altus Schools. “Our One-Stop Enrollment is much more efficient, as parents are not only able to enroll all of their children, but also may sign them up for busing, extended-day care, the school lunch program, and more.”

Altus Public Schools will hold their annual One-Stop Enrollment for all newcomers from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Friday, August 3. All students new to Altus Schools may come and enroll, regardless of which school they plan to attend. Parents may make one stop, complete all paperwork, and enroll all of their children. There’s no need to drive to each school.

Returning students are already pre-enrolled and do not need to come to One-Stop Enrollment, unless they need to get immunizations.

The Altus Kiwanis Club is partnering with the school district to provide free breakfast pastries, juices, and coffee for all coming to the event in the morning, as well as a hot-dog meal for those arriving from lunch time until 3 p.m.

Jimminee the Clown and Little Red will provide entertainment for the children at the event.

The Jackson County Health Department will be at One-Stop Enrollment, to provide immunizations necessary for school to all students (returning or new) who need them. All shots will be provided free of charge. Students should bring their shot records and, if they are not accompanied by a parent, they must bring a signed parental permission letter.

Students who are enrolling in Altus Schools for the first time should bring the following items: Birth certificates (K & Pre-K), proof of residency (such as proof of payment of local or ad valorem taxes, title to a residential property in the district, valid and unexpired mortgage/lease agreement, receipt for payment of rent, current utility bill, or notarized affidavit verifying residency), current immunization records, Social Security Numbers for each child (optional), previous school records, and proof of custody (for children not living with a parent).

All newcomers who are unable to attend One-Stop Enrollment may enroll beginning August 6, at their respective schools. After One-Stop Enrollment, elementary students not attending Rivers Elementary on base will need to obtain school assignment paperwork from the Altus Schools Administrative Center (located at 219 N. Lee) before they will be able to enroll.

Meet the Teacher Day will be held at each Altus school from 8 a.m. to noon, on Friday, August 10. The first day of school is set for Tuesday, August 14.

Once again the NCAA botched it
I have to laugh at the NCAA simply because they are so comical in their decision making. This will not be the first time I have criticized the NCAA for some of the decisions they have made in the past and certainly won’t be the last. And by the way I’m not the only one that taking that stand wit...
