Local puppet show at library on Thursday

As a part of the summer reading program theme, “Dream Big, Read!” the Altus Public Library is happy to announce Joann McMillan of Flying Heart Theatre will be at the library Thursday, July 19 at 2 p.m., with her production “The Night,” a multi-media puppet show with marionettes, rod puppets and giant puppets. Along with the puppets, there will be lots of audience participation.

This is Joann’s second visit to the Altus Public Library, and if her first performance here is anything to go by, “The Night” will be a very exciting performance. The performance is free and should be lots of fun for the whole family.

Joann received her BA in drama and secondary education at the University of Delaware in 1974. Before becoming a puppeteer, she was a teacher in public, private and home schools. She was the recreation director at Arrowhead and Fountainhead Resorts in Oklahoma. She joined the Oklahoma Arts Council’s Artist-in-Residence program and their Touring Artist Roster in 1993. She is presently Artistic Director, scriptwriter, and puppeteer for Children’s Historical Resource Center, Museum of Pioneer History in Candler, OK. She also conducts bi-annual one-week camps at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. This is just a small sample of Joann’s many accomplishments.

Joann’s performance is made possible, in part, with a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council. In addition, the Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people and information. Sonic, America’s Drive-In is also a proud sponsor of the 2012 Summer Reading Program.

For more information about the program, call the library at 477-2890.

Once again the NCAA botched it
I have to laugh at the NCAA simply because they are so comical in their decision making. This will not be the first time I have criticized the NCAA for some of the decisions they have made in the past and certainly won’t be the last. And by the way I’m not the only one that taking that stand wit...
