Council gearing up for spelling bee

At the Great Plains Literacy Council quarterly meeting on Jan. 9, it was a unanimous decision to sponsor the “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee to raise needed funds to continue services in the area. This fund raising event will be held on Saturday, March 9, and will start at 9 a.m. in the Band Hall (Room H12) at Western Oklahoma State College, 2801 N. Main, Altus.

“The ‘Grate’ word was used to draw attention to spelling and to describe the friendly, fun competition associated at the fund raiser,” explained the GPLC Community Relations Committee chair Jacquelyn Parrish. “It really is a ‘great’ event.”

Teams can consist of 2-3 adult members and must turn in entries by Monday, March 4, to the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson. A team entry will cost $100. If persons want to make financial contributions only, the donations can help sponsor an unfunded team in whole or in part. The contestants will be able to work together when given a word at the spelling bee.

“As soon as sponsors pay the $100 for a team to participate,” explained Mrs. Parrish, “team members can get the rules and guidelines for the contest which is six weeks away.”

The words range from beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. If a team wishes to skip a word given and select the next word, the team can use a mulligan (not stew). The team has the opportunity to purchase three mulligans for $25, which can be paid when paying the registration fee or at the event.

The Great Plains Literacy Council current members include President Ryan Howard, Vice President Carol Steen, Secretary Lynn Osterhout, Treasurer Katherine Hale, Gloria Birdine, Rick Cheaney, Sharon Duffy, Nancy Evans, Anduin McElroy, Carlos Mendoza, Gail Miller, Jacquelyn Parrish, Casey Podoll, Mel Rader, Sonya Revilla, Mary Beth Williams, and Rana Womack. The Literacy Council staff includes Ida Fay Winters, Elsa L. Garcia, Aleida Burchett, and Rachel Richardson. Any of these persons will “bee” happy for all donations to the literacy council and for participants becoming involved. Call the Great Plains Literacy Council at 580-477-2890 for more information.

Once again the NCAA botched it
I have to laugh at the NCAA simply because they are so comical in their decision making. This will not be the first time I have criticized the NCAA for some of the decisions they have made in the past and certainly won’t be the last. And by the way I’m not the only one that taking that stand wit...
