The Great Plains Literacy Council is encouraging their adult learners and volunteer tutors, along with all ages of the public, to participate in D.E.A.R. Day on Friday, April 12. D.E.A.R. stands for “Drop Everything And Read,” a celebration of reading designed to remind folks of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives.
D.E.A.R. programs have been held nationwide on April 12 in honor of the beloved author Beverly Cleary’s birthday. When Mrs. Cleary wrote about Ramona and her classmates sharing a D.E.A.R. experience in Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (pages 40-41), the Harper Collins Childrens Books decided to honor the author on her birthday with the special promotion of reading.
Great Plains Literacy Council tutors have been helping their adult learners find an appropriate stories or books to read that day, especially to their children or grandchildren. Many of the bi-lingual children’s books were provided from the State Literacy Resource Office for their local project.
The goal of the day is to prompt people to make reading a regular part of their routine … whether they’re reading solo or together with their classmates, parents, or friends. So, go ahead and join the millions of families, literacy programs, schools, bookstores, and communities who have participated throughout the years and pledge to “drop” what you’re doing in order to read a good book.
