According to Assistant Police Chief Mike Turner, an Altus man, Bobby Joe Hurd, 25, was observed by an Altus Police Officer driving a vehicle on May 6. The officer had prior knowledge that Hurd’s license was suspended and dispatch confirmed that suspension.
The officer attempted to stop Hurd, however, he refused to stop and pulled into the Briarwood Apts at 201 N. Veterans Drive. There driver came to a stop and a juvenile passenger fled the vehicle and was captured a short distance away.
During the investigation, a firearm and a substance believed to be marijuana was located. Turner said Hurd was subsequently charged with eluding an officer, driving under suspension, and a felon in possession of a firearm. Included on the jail booking recap were additional charges of driving without a license and transporting a loaded firearm.
According to court records, Hurd had just had a formal arraignment on May 2, for false or misleading information given to the Sex Offender Registry. He plead not guilty. His pre-trial docket was set for Sept. 14 on that offense. Based on the new charges made May 6, a bench warrant for motion to revoke was issued and served on May 7. This was for a suspended sentence on a Dec. 2007 aggravated assault and battery case against Hurd.
