Walkin’ on Chalk set for April 14

Main Street Altus is once again hosting “Walkin’ On Chalk” in downtown Altus. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, April 14. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The chalk and drawing contest will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Judging will be from 3 to 4 p.m., with awards announced at 4 p.m.There will be cash prizes, as well as additional sponsorships from the Cotton Patch, Enchanted Door, and Dora Lou’s Place.

The sidewalk chalk drawing contest will consist of seven age groups: 1st-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grade, 5th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, 9th-10th grade, 11th-12th grade, and college/adult. Entrants will get a 5’x5’ space of concrete to create their works of art on for only $5.

There will also be a coloring/drawing contest for kids 1st and 2nd grade at no charge. Crayons and paper will be provided.

High school art students will also be participating in an Banner Contest. Their banners will be on display on the light poles around the downtown square.

For those entering the chalk contest, you need to bring your own supplies. These could include chalk, water bottles, rags, sponges and brushes. Tempra paints and nudes are not allowed.

Bring the whole family and walk the square looking at the contestants as they work, and pick up a bargain or two from many of the merchants who plan to be open that day. There will also be street vendors and art displays.

Those planning on attending the event are urged to bring their lawn chairs and stay a while.
