A “Rising Star” in Altus

Michael Speer of Altus takes home the “Rising Star” award from O’Reilly’s 33rd Annual World of Wheels car show in Witchita Falls, Texas, held Feb. 8, 9, and 10. The award is given out to the youngest competitors who are “up and coming,” says 21-year-old Speer.

His 2002 Chevy Pickup, “Home Wrecker,” also won the 1st place for Best in Class for Semi- award, 3rd place in his club “Vertically Challenged”, and also the Street Achievement award for using his truck for daily transportation.

The rising star also claimed 3rd place “Overall Full Custom Class,” at the WEGO Tour held in Altus, to Lawton, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, and has been featured two recent issues of the car magazine, “Street Seen.”

“I love it,” said Speers, about how often he competes. He has be taking his custom pickup to shows just about every weekend. He admits however, he gets a little uneasy of kids running around and touching his truck.

Beginning in Jan. 2012, besides the paint and the interior, Speer has done all the work himself. Each night after work he would “do little things here and there,” he explained. An estimated $15k later, “Home Wrecker” is now equipped with a bagged air suspension system, performance chip, cold air intake system, billet steering wheel, custom sound system, custom wood floor bed, custom LED taillight-bar, custom front bumper, and custom roll pan, and has 24” rims, shaved doors, shaved tailgate and taillights, and HID head lights.

Julian’s Customs in Altus is to thank for the beautiful paint, interior and upholstery work, and a custom car seat to perfectly match the interior.

“They also really helped out on the price,” Speer added.

Speer has been working on cars with his dad, Greg Speer, since he was little. His dad who also won an award back in 1998 at the World of Wheels, would enter into competitions for cars that his son had actually worked on but was too young to compete, including a low-rider bike he had started at ten years old. At 16, he was finally able to enter into competitions on his own.

Once again the NCAA botched it
I have to laugh at the NCAA simply because they are so comical in their decision making. This will not be the first time I have criticized the NCAA for some of the decisions they have made in the past and certainly won’t be the last. And by the way I’m not the only one that taking that stand wit...
