The American Red Cross has sent more local volunteers to the east coast, a total of 10 as of Wednesday, Oct. 31, all from Central and Western Oklahoma. Three are already in New York and New Jersey.

The following locations show what each volunteer will be doing there after Hurricane Sandy. The Altus volunteer- NY Damage Assessment, OKC volunteer- Logistics, Woodward volunteer- NY Disaster Mental Health, Shawnee volunteer (Leaving Thursday)- NJ Sheltering, two Ada volunteers- NJ Sheltering and one more volunteer- NY Sheltering.

According to Regional Director of Communications, Ken Garcia, “The Altus volunteer is Steve Grayson. He is heading to White Plains, NY where he will be a damage assessment supervisor. This means he will lead teams around communities to see what the storm did to these areas.” Garcia said Grayson will inspect homes, “essentially going home to home to make sure everyone is covered. After these assessments, case workers are called in to help families and volunteers will hand out bulk items like rakes, shovels and trash bags to help with clean up.” When asked how long Grayson will be there, Garcia said, “The typical deployment is two to three weeks. It really depends on the amount of work needed to be done.”

The Red Cross is still asking for donations through the website redcross.org or text REDCROSS to 90999 for a 10 dollar donation. They are also in need of blood donations. For information on that please visit redcrossblood.org.
