During a special joint meeting of the Altus Municipal Authority and the Altus City Council on Tuesday, elected officials Debbie Davis - City Clerk/Treasurer, and Councilmen Richard G. Henry - Ward I, Michael T. Beason- Ward II, Perry Shelton- Ward III, and Dwayne E. Martin- Ward IV, were sworn in by Municipal Court Judge Ken Darby.
Once the inducted council members took their seats at the Council table, Altus Mayor David Webb called the new Administration to order and took a roll call. Councilman Chad Osbourne and Councilman Mike Patterson were absent for the special meeting.
Mayor Webb recognized and thanked Scot Simco and Jack Smiley for their efforts completed over the last four years. “We have truly come a long way, and we appreciate their work very much,” he said.
Newly elected Beason commented, “I am honored to serve the people of the City of Altus and I would ask for your continued prayers, not just for me but the entire City Council. I think we are facing challenging times. I think we’re going to see it though. Again I ask for your continued prayers. Thank you all.”
Martin stated, “I agree were facing challenging times, but we’ll find solutions. Let’s get to work.”
Perry Shelton commented, “I would like to say, ‘thank you’ to Jack and Scot for all the work they did while they were here as well, and welcome these two new guys. They’ve got some tough shoes to fill but I know they’re up to it and ready to go, so thank you.”
“Lots of folks don’t understand the amount of work these council members do,” Mayor Webb commented. “It’s not just showing up for a meeting twice a month… There are a lot of technical issues that we deal with, anything from water to sewer to the airport, and these guys want to know as much as they can about every issue that we deal with, and that takes a lot of time and effort. For those who have left, and the new guys coming on, I know you have that same mentality and will do that same work… I appreciate the level of work and professionalism that goes into doing your job.”
Following the special meeting and induction ceremony, refreshments were served until the AMA’s regular meeting began at 6:30 p.m.
