Winter canola meetings, crop insurance applications and hopefully, a better growing season are coming

1 days 4 hours ago | | | Email

Winter canola has grown in importance as a money crop and for rotating with winter wheat for a decade. But in its 9th crop year of 2013-14, almost all of the wheels came off the crop wagon.Like the wheat crop, canola was dusted in with little or no soil moisture with farmers trusting October rains would help out. And in October, 2013, the US government sequester of funds and services left many farmers without crop insurance to protect them against a natural disaster. Not only was the winter dry, it was cold, too, further stressing winter crops in the Southern Plains. And to cap all of it off, a late freeze in April, 2014. put the final nail in the crops’ coffin.
