‘Road To Rio’ raises $4,600 for Will To Run

The Will To Run “Road to Rio” Fitness Competition was held on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Altus, where local athletes pushed themselves to their limits for a fundraising cause to send William McCaskill, II., of Altus, to the World Athletics Center in Phoenix, Ariz. The event, hosted by the Will To Run Committe, Evolved Fitness, and the Professional Loadmasters Association, raised approximately $4,600 through food, t-shirt, and entry fee sales. In all, organizers have reported a total of nearly $22,000 raised by the community of Altus in support of this hometown athlete.McCaskill landed in Phoenix on Sunday to begin his training to compete in upcoming USA track meets and hopefully the 2016 Summer Olympics. ‘Seat Check Saturday’ Event in Altus a Major Success

The Altus Fire Department and Jackson County Health Department reported that 12 car seats were inspected by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and 16 new car seats were distributed during the recent car seat check event at Altus Fire Station 2. The event was sponsored by Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Safe Kids Oklahoma. Altus man arrested on child rape charges

Altus Police arrested a 19-year-old man, Imashay Don Shivers, on complaints of 1st degree rape, rape by instrumentation, and resisting arrest. Investigators went the suspects residence at 1229 West Davis Monday afternoon at around 2 p.m. to serve a felony arrest warrant. Man pleas guilty to second degree murder

A former Altus man, Garland Allen, 49, entered a plea of guilty on two counts of 2nd degree murder on Thursday, Sept. 26, during a plea hearing at Jackson County Courthouse, making a 13-year cold case officially closed. According to Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy, warrants were issued for eight individuals in connection with a human trafficking/sex crimes case.Murphy said that an investigation began in January 2013 by Altus Police that resulted in charges being filed in Jackson County District Court for sex crimes against a 13 year old female.

City-wide “Clean Up Altus” event tomorrow

“Clean Up Altus,” the city-wide cleanup event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the Altus Community Center on Falcon Road between 8-9 a.m., on the East side, to register and pick up their trash bags. Volunteers may want to bring their own pair of gloves.
