The Altus High School Bulldogs, fresh off their week-one road test at Vernon, come back home for week-two facing a very dangerous opponent. Anadarko has lost only three games in the last five years.
The Anadarko Warriors are coming off their week-one win against Chickasha, 33-7. Anadarko is ranked #4 in class 4A and have had to replace 18 departing seniors from a year ago. The Warriors are starting their third quarterback in only six years. The quarterback position has been a positive mainstay for Anadarko, and it looks like nothing has changed.
Anadarko’s Nick Gallegos (#10), is extremely elusive. He hits the hole often times on QB keepers as the jet sweep passes in front him in the shotgun formation, very quickly. Based off of the film that was available to me, most of his runs show Gallegos making multiple cuts against the pursuit of the defense. It’s easy to see that Gallegos possesses advanced field vision for a quarterback in only his first start. The few throws I’ve seen confirm the pre-season reports on Gallegos, in that he can throw well enough to keep a defense honest.
However, Anadarko won’t feature the pass. They will rely heavily on their big boys up front on the offensive line, and Gallegos’ ability to use their various trap-and-counter style blocking techniques to find what little room he needs to get through the initial defensive surge, and into the second and third levels of the defense.
The Bulldog defense will be prepared, and should be confident in their game plan to stop the Warriors’ rushing attack. Coach Vargas has proven time and time again a genius level ability to understand opposing offensive intentions. Friday’s absolutely dominant performance in the second half against Vernon proves Vargas’ uncanny ability to push the right buttons in the locker room at half.
