The Altus Junior High Dawgs 7th grade football team remain unbeaten. They came from behind to beat Lawton Central 18-8 yesterday inside The Rock.

Before many of the Dawgs’ fans even found their seats, the Central Cougars returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for the score. The conversion was good. The Cougars were up 8-0. That was the last time they would have their efforts rewarded with any points.

Altus went on a long drive on their first possession. Altus still had the ball of the start of the second period. One play into the second quarter, tailback Victor Velasquez ran 15 tough yards up the middle of the Cougar defense for a touchdown. The conversion failed and Altus trailed 8-6.

After a Cougar punt, Altus started another drive. With 20 seconds left in the half, Chehemu Morgan III ran 51 yards for a score. The conversion failed and Altus led 12-8 heading into the half.

Altus took the second half kickoff and was able to score with 4:19 left in the third quarter. Quarterback Raul Facundo hit Morgan for a 57 yard touchdown pass. The conversion failed. Altus led 18-8 heading into the final quarter.

Neither of the teams crossed the goal line in the final frame. The Dawgs took the victory 18-8.

The Altus defense was dominant. The Cougars only managed to get one first down. The Dawg defense has allowed only six first downs in their first four games. Laethon Patterson, Riley Barrington, Nick Roman, Branson Ford and Owens led the defense. Owens and Ford had interceptions for the Dawgs.

The Altus offense was led by Morgan who had 83 yards on four carries. Patterson had 73 yards on seven carries.

Altus will take it’s undefeated 4-0 record to face a very tough Duncan team next week at Duncan.
