The Altus Junior High Dawgs football team kept the day’s winning theme against Central going by winning 22-6.

The defense was dominant. The offense used big plays to impress the Dawgs’ fans for the fourth time this season.

After forcing the Cougars to punt on their first possession, the Dawgs went on a drive that was capped off by quarterback Dylan McGill when he went around the left side of the line. He broke through four tackles and scored from 20 yards out. Slotback, Mysean Wells, ran in the conversion. Altus led 8-0 heading into the second quarter.

The Dawg defense once again pushed the Cougars back and forced a punt. Altus drove down the field. With 4:45 left in the half, McGill ran it in from five yards out. Cabe Dickerson ran in the conversion to give Altus a 16-0 lead going into the half.

It didn’t take long for Altus to score in the third quarter. Fullback, Hunter Webb, went around the left side of the Altus line and sprinted for a 62 yard touchdown. The conversion failed. Altus led 22-0.

Central was finally able to crack the Dawg defense late in the third quarter. With 2:24 left in the third quarter, the Cougars crossed the goal line making the score 22-6 after the conversion failed.

The Dawg defense was led by Webb, Dickerson, Caleb Leyja, Ayden Lesley and Rece Gribble.

The Altus offense was led by Webb who had 80 yards on five carries. McGill added 37 yards on five carries.

The victory kept the Dawgs undefeated on the season at 4-0. The Dawgs will hit the road next week to play at Duncan.

This will be a clash of two undefeated teams. If you haven’t yet seen this junior high bunch play, you should. You will be comforted about the future of the Bulldog football program. This 8th grade group is for real. They are huge, fast and talented. More importantly, they play as a team. That is THE formula for success in this game. A coach’s motivational quote says, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” However, if you have both, it makes for something special.

Make a point to see these youngsters play the game they love. You will see something special.
