Brad Gilbert -

Velocity Softball, Inc, a non-profit corporation based in Altus, will open a new softball academy and indoor practice facility on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The new 10,000 square foot facility, located at 1013 Grady St (behind O’Reilly’s Auto Parts), will feature three indoor batting cages and a large multi-use area. The multi-use are is perfect for defensive drills.

The Softball Academy is home to Velocity competitive travel teams and is available for team, group, and individual space rentals by appointment.

Velocity Head Coach, Joey Stengell, will offer pitching/catching lessons and skills clinics.

The facility will host an Open House on Saturday, Nov. 21. The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with refreshments, activities for the kids, and information on upcoming events.

“When I relocated here last year from Virginia, I noticed a need for an indoor practice space,” said Velocity coach Joey Stengell. “Our athletes need a facility they can use all year to improve softball fundamentals. This training academy is a great start to providing opportunities for players in our community.”

Velocity Softball is excited to announce several clinics being offered in December. On Dec. 5, an offensive and defensive skills clinic for fastpitch players for grades 3 through 8 has two sessions available. Both sessions are two hours in length. Session 1 will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Session 2 will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. There is a limit of 15 spots available per session.

On Dec. 12, the same clinic is offered. Only one session from 9 to 11 a.m. will be held.

On Dec. 19, The Softball Academy is hosting a Fastpitch Futures College Coaches event for ages 8 through 12 from 9 a.m to noon. Then, from 1 to 4 p.m The Academy will host a Skills Showcase for ages 13 through 18. Space is limited to 25 players per session.

For reservations, pricing or other information on the clinics, call Stengell at 580-481-0391.

This is a great thing for the Altus softball community. Having a local facility like this is long overdue considering the absolute explosion of high end softball from Altus, Hollis, Mangum, Navajo to Frederick.
