Birdow ranked 3rd best back in state

Taven Birdow gets a break during team camp last week.

According to, Altus Bulldog Taven Birdow is the 3rd best running back in the state of Oklahoma. All classes were pooled together for the ranking list and Birdow is nestled in the 3rd spot behind Jeremy Lewis of Locust Grove and Booker T. Washington’s Justice Hill. Hill has committed to play at Oklahoma State following his senior season.

If you go to and look at the OKG Big Board on running backs, you will see a place to vote on which running back you think is the best in the state.

At the time of this article, there had been 889 votes cast in one day of voting and the public, at least 80% of the public feels that Birdow is the best back in the state.

I know many of us are ready for some football. Many folks have stated that they are more ready for this season than any other they can remember.

Birdow may be ranked 3rd best at his position by this online proponent of Oklahoma high school sports but he very well could be the best all-around athlete in this state. Birdow’s running back efforts two seasons ago was enough to claim the all-time school record for a season. He is also a wrestling State Champion and his best sport may actually be baseball and that includes a full year away from the game while he was at IMG Academy.

It is exciting to have such a great young man represent us Bulldogs. Taven will be turning heads all year. He certainly made waves in Florida last year. Yes, he split carries with 3 other backs last year on a throwing team. However, the majority of the carries were divided almost equally by Birdow and Tony Jones. Jones is now in a golden helmet practicing with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Birdow still finds himself under the recruiting radar somewhat. He has received D1 offers from Army, Richmond and Southern Mississippi.

Any down time in recruiting that Birdow can find a break from here before the season kicks off, he should take advantage of it and enjoy being a teenager. Soon, media personnel from radio, TV, newspapers and online services will be clamoring for any angle in on Birdow’s time. Notice I left the actual recruitment of Birdow out of that list. Altus has never had a Bulldog in this position of being sought after so highly. There have been other great athletes here, but none during the information age.

Welcome back, Taven. You have my vote.
