Mary Runyan was awarded The Band Director of the Year for the state of Oklahoma on July 23. This award was given at the annual Oklahoma Bandmaster’s Convention in Tulsa at the Renaissance Hotel. Mary is starting her 36th year as an Oklahoma band director. Mary is a 1975 graduate of Fox High School. In 1979, Mary received her BME from The University of Oklahoma, where she marched four years in the Pride of Oklahoma marching band. In 1987, Mary received her MME from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Mary taught four years at Velma-Alma public schools. She came to Altus in 1984, as the band director at Northeast Junior High, moving to Altus Junior High in 1991, and moved to Altus High School as the High School Band Director in January of 1997.
Mary has traveled to Europe five times with the Oklahoma Ambassador’s of Music, has conducted a workshop at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois, conducted workshops at Oklahoma Music Educator’s Convention and Oklahoma Bandmaster’s convention. She has received the state musician of the year for the Federated Music Club’s of Oklahoma, and has received the Oklahoma Music Educator’s Exemplary Teacher Award. She is a National Board Certified teacher.
That Altus Band has received many awards during her tenure. They have received many superior ratings and have received the outstanding band trophy in many out of state competitions. (Orlando, Florida; Branson, Missouri; San Diego, Calif.; Durango, Colo.; and San Antonio, Texas; Chicago, Ill.) The band was one of six band chosen to march in Oklahoma’s Centennial Parade and recently was the only Oklahoma band invited to march in the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
Mary is a member of OEA, OMEA, OBA, OU Alumni Band, MacDowell Club, Phi Beta Mu, and is in the praise band at First Baptist Church.
