With less than three weeks until the “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee on March 26, some teams have started making preparations. The Page Eaters Book Club representatives Emily Smith (left) with a dictionary, Mary Vernon (center) reading a novel, and Anna Harter using an e-book, are reading for information and word knowledge for their spelling team, but mainly because they enjoy reading for the fun of it. For more information or questions about the “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee, see the story on page 3A or give them a “buzz” at 477-2890.

Have a honey of a time! Enter or sponsor a team in the Great Plains Literacy Council’s “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 26, at Western Oklahoma State College. The deadline for team registration is Monday, March 22. The registration fee of $100 for a team of two or three adults can be paid by that deadline at the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson. This is a fundraising event to help support literacy programs services with the Great Plains Literacy Council.

One new spelling team has made their registration and started making preparations. The Page Eaters Book Club (seen on page 1A) is a recent community contributor to the Great Plains Literacy Council by sponsoring a spelling team from their membership.

“When I read in the newspaper about the Spelling Bee raising money for literacy,” said Anna Harter, “I wanted our book reading club to get involved.”

Their team will be represented by Mary Vernon, Emily Smith, and Anna Harter. Their club meets to discuss a book every month and has 11 members. The club is really supporting their team as some have volunteered to help on costume development, to attend the event for moral support, or to purchase “mulligans” or word pass coupons for $10 each or $25 for three.

This event will give prizes to the top two spelling teams, the best team costume, and the best team name. For the teams wanting to have costumes, there will be special prizes for that category. According to the Spelling Bee committee, there is also a “traveling award” for the top placing team from the base. Door prizes and refreshments will be included during the morning event.

To be a part of the “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee on March 26 at the WOSC in the Band Hall Room H-12, just gather up friends and co-workers from your company, organization, club neighborhood and register at the Altus Public Library. As soon as the form is completed with the registration, the study booklets and rules are available. Some people make contributions that help provide some scholarships for teams with no sponsorship.

For more information give them a “buzz” at 477-2890.
