MANGUM - Carnegie used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Mangum Tigers, 33-0, in a district A-2 game Friday night at Mangum.
The Wildcats scored three touchdowns on the ground and two by passing. They rushed for 261 rushing yards threw for 166 more.
The Mangum defense, led by Ryan Kendall, Heath Mitchell, Rowdy Pitts, Brandon Maddex and Dustin Phillips did a good job in the first half holding the potent Carnegie ground game to just 47 yards rushing. However, the Wildcats used the pass effectively throwing for 124 yards in the half.
Mangum moved the ball in spurts during the first 24 minutes, but the Tigers could not sustain a drive for a score.
Carnegie scored their first touchdown on a 71-yard drive in nine plays. The TD was set up on a 43-yard screen pass from quarterback Tyler Silverhorn to Raymond Gloria to the Tiger 7-yard-line. Two plays later tailback Tim Tahkofper scored on a 4-yard-run. Silverhorn kicked the extra point and Carnegie led with 8:05 remaining in the second quarter.
Mangum mounted a drive on its next possession. The Tigers moved from their own 32 to the Wildcat 43. Mangum faced a fourth-and-eight when coach Jim Kerbo ordered a fake punt. Jace Clayton was thrown for a 5-yard loss and Carnegie took over on their own 48-yard-line.
Carnegie scored nine plays later. Silverhorn hit Johnathan O'Toole on a fade route for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Silverhorn kicked the extra point and the Wildcats led 14-0 with 2:46 left in the half.
Carnegie took complete control in the second half. They scored three times, once on a 42-yard pass from Silverhorn to Carl Monassy, once on a 30-yard run by Tahkofper and on a 29-yard run by Tanner Kelley.
Mangum's best chance to score in the second half came thanks to good defensive plays by Ryan Kendall and William Stehr. Early in the fourth quarter, Stehr sacked Silverhorn for 5-yard loss and forced a fumble. Kendall recovered at the Carnegie 30.
But Mangum could not capitalize. The Tigers were called for holding, then Quarterback Nick Kendall was sacked for a 15-yard loss. Fullback Brandon Maddex was thrown for a 2-yard loss and facing a difficult third-and-37 situation, Nick Kendall threw an interception.
The loss dropped Mangum's season record to 2-5 and 1-3 in district play. The Tigers travel to Apache next Friday night.
