OKLAHOMA CITY -- Area legislators announced Monday a pair of state grants will help pay for water improvements in Blair. Oklahoma Department of Commerce records show both water quality and volume will be increased to the water distribution system in Blair.
"This is a newly developed program that partners with substate planning districts to make a greater impact by matching community development block grants (CDBG) and Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) grants dollar for dollar," said Scott Myers, economic and community development team leader with the Commerce Department.
State Rep. David Braddock and state Sen. Robert M. Kerr, both D-Altus, said a $42,438 CDBG from the agency will be coupled with a $42,438 matching REAP grant from the South Western Oklahoma Development Association for the project.
Department blueprints indicate the $84,876 will be used to replace existing water lines, install new distribution lines, fire hydrants and service connections. The project includes areas along Fifth and Sixth streets, and along Stonehocker and Taylor avenues in Blair.
Braddock recalled that the Legislature created the REAP in 1996 to help underwrite public improvements in communities of 7,000 population or less, particularly areas with 1,500 or fewer residents.
