Each of them has a patch of an American flag to adorn their leather jacket, and each of them has a wish to fulfill this Christmas -- a wish for toys.

The members of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club and the Associates are wishing for the arms of community children to filled with toys and food. For the fourth year they are sponsoring Toy Run Altus.

Former member James "Chili" Chillquist revved up the idea four years ago and the club continues the tradition. The club is a national organization, and area groups from Lawton, Duncan and Comanche also host a Toy Run for their community. The Altus group also travels to those surrounding cities to support other Toy Runs.

The Altus Toy Run begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hog Wild, located at 1500 West Broadway. Participants can arrive at the motorcycle shop between 11 a.m. and noon to sign in and receive a free raffle ticket. Coffee and donuts will also be served to participants.

The entry fee to participate in the run is one unwrapped toy and two canned goods. The Toy Run, which will be led by an Altus police escort, will leave from Hog Wild at 1 p.m. and caravan through Altus ending at the fire station.

Participants do not have to cruise in the run on a motorcycle, and can join in on any other form of transportation.

"Non-motorcycles will be tolerated," joked Pat Peterson, club member.

All the donated toys and canned goods will be left at the fire station, and they will then be distributed by the Altus fire department to area children and their families.

The run will conclude with a turkey or ham lunch at Trader Tom's, located at 2308 E. Broadway Street. Door prizes with tickets will also be given to participants.

In case of inclement weather, participants will leave the motorcycles at home and drive four wheeled vehicles.

Yet come rain or shine, the Altus club members said the run will occur, because their priority is getting the toys and food to the community

children.

"We just do it for the kids," said member Felix Martinez.
