Conger


Verna Butler Conger, 89, of Sapulpa died Jan., 17, 2004 at Ranch Terrace Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 14, 1914 in Olustee and lived there until moving to Sapulpa in the late 1980s. She and her husband, J.C. opened a resturant in 1950.

Later Verna was employed as dietician at the Jackson County Hospital and attended the Altus College of Cosmetology where she became an instructor and worked as such for several years. She owned and operated Verna's Beauty Shop where she trained students including her daughter and grand daughter. She was president of the Oklahoma Cemetery association and was active in the Olustee Women's Club for a number of years.

Verna was proceeded in death by her husband, J.C. Conger on June 5, 1983, her parents, Boss and Ruth Butler; brother, Jack Butler; son-in-law, Bill Brown; brother-in-law, Bennie Brown, and grandsons Miller Dean and Matthew Guy Conger.

She is survived by daughter Jean (Conger) Brown of Sapulpa; sons, Miller and his wife, Marge Conger, of Flower Mound, Texas and Don and his wife, Etta Conger, of Headrick. She is also survived by two sisters; Juanita (Butler) Brown of Bartlesville and Dean (Butler) Brown of Edmond. She left behind 10 grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and a host of friends.

She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and it can be truthfully said of her, "She went about doing good".

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at Olustee Church of Christ with Bill Osborne officiating. Interment will be in the Olustee Cemetery under the direction of Peoples Cooperative Funeral Service of Lone Wolf.

Williams


Lisa Gaye Williams, 48, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 in Miami. She was born Dec. 21, 1955 in Hobart to Harry Dewey and Ernestine (Kauahquo) Kauley.

She grew up in Hobart and graduated from Hobart High School in 1974. Following graduation, she attended Oklahoma University and played two years in the O.U. marching band. Later, she received her bachelor of science degree in biology and a minor in spanish from Southwestern State University, Weatherford.

She was a member of the Spanish Club and Biology Club. She married Steven Williams on May 28, 1987 in Hobart. She taught school at Clinton Public Schools and had been project manager for Cheyenne-Arapaho Housing Authority. She was a member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Hobart.

Williams was preceded in death by her father, Harry Kauley; maternal grandparents, Ernest and Helen Kauahquo; paternal grandparents, Calvin and Stella Kauley; and nephew, Seth Lee Hunn.

She is survived by her husband, Steven Williams, of the home; daughter Stevie Rae Williams of Hobart; mother Ernestine Kauley of Hobart; brother Tom Kauley of Rockville, Md.; three sisters, Natachee Hunn of Altus, Jean Ann Kauley and Sacha Smith, both of Oklahoma City; three nephews, Jeremy Hunn of Altus, Timothy Kauley of Chickasha and Victor Smith III of Oklahoma City; and niece Miriam Hunn of Altus.

Kinslow


Rozella Sue Kinslow was born June 6, 1933 in Mangum to William Chandler Kinslow and Rosa Ruth (Reeves) Kinslow and died in Mangum Jan. 15, 2004 at the age of 70 years, seven months and nine days.

Kinslow graduated from Mangum High School in 1952 and worked for Southwest Cell Telephone Company for a number of years and then worked for Oklahoma Gas & Electric in Oklahoma City until her retirement.

She was a unique person who enjoyed being with her family and considered her nieces and nephews as her own children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ramona Roach; one brother, Roger Kinslow and a dear friend, Dean Rose.

Survivors include a brother, Ronald Kinslow and wife Loretta of Granada Hills, Calif.; a sister, Marquita Kinslow Francis and husband Thomas of Mangum; nephews and nieces, Riley Gene Roach, Lisa Daun Roach Cooper, Ann Kinslow Swearingen and husband Dawson, Richard Kinslow, Tommy Dale Francis, Douglas Mark Francis and wife Mechelle, and Dean's sons, Terry Rose and wife Ginna and Jerry Rose.

Graveside services for Sue Kinslow are set for 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at Riverside Cemetery in Mangum, Roger Todd officiating. Arrangements are with People's Co-operative Funeral Home, Lone Wolf.

Simmons


Margy Ellen Simmons, 71, Altus, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 in the Memorial Chapel at Kincannon Funeral Home with Bill Osborne officiating. Interment will be at Altus City Cemetery.

She was born Feb. 2, 1932 in Indianola, Neb. to Archie and Neva (Fassler) Ball. She attended Indianola schools. She spent much of her childhood growing up in Brooks, Alberta and then returned with her family to a farm near McCook, Neb., where she attended high school.

After World War II, she met and married the love of her life, D.G. Simmons, on Feb. 27, 1949 in McCook, Neb. During their nearly 55 years of marriage, two children were born, Leanna Kay Simmons Bridgett and Kenneth George Simmons. Due to her husband's employment with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the family lived in several states, including Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Simmons was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who thoroughly enjoyed her home, family, friends and neighbors. She had a zest for life, a wonderful sense of humor and loved long drives through the countryside, fishing, reading, cooking and O.U. football.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of the home, D.G. Simmons; a daughter and son-in-law, Leanna and Jim Bridgett of Friendswood, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Tonya Simmons of Altus; grandsons David Bridgett and wife Emily, Eric Bridgett, Kenneth Simmons II and Kevin Simmons; step granddaughters Angela Biddy and Jennifer Castillo; great grandchildren Kaithan and Madison Simmons; brothers and sisters Wayne Ball and wife Shirley, McCook, Neb., Roger Ball and wife Carol, McCook Neb., Betty Newlun, Hastings, Neb., Gerry Leibbrandt, Holdridge, Neb., Dan Simmons and wife Cindy, Larry Simmons and wife Joyce, Norman Simmons, Dewey Matherly and husband Edwin, Diana Roberts and husband Cliff, Harriett Huber, Maureen Gunn and husband Thomas; numerous step grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friends Mary and Phillip Lankford, Jill, Rick and Brooke Bottom.

Our beloved wife and mother was a continual source of joy and happiness and our lives. While she will be greatly missed, we will forever cherish the memories of her laughter, love and kindness.

Smith


Eddie D. Smith, 62, of Altus died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 in the Altus City Cemetery Veterans section with full military honors. Bobby Laws will officiate services under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

He was born on March 13, 1941 in Leahron to Willie and Lorene (Rader) Smith. He graduated from high school in Hartner, Kan., in 1959. He married Connie Simpkins on Feb. 17, 1965. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1964 and retired in 1984 as a command master chief. His many tours of military duty included three years of service in Vietnam.

While in the military, Smith earned his bachelor's degree in business administration. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of the Masonic Lodge #62 and enjoyed fishing during retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Connie; his second wife, Kathleen Janel Glidewell; and two sisters, Ella Marie Pugh and Gayla Smith.

He is survived by one daughter, Deborah Smith of Troup, Texas; one son, Dennis Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; one brother of Seattle; and two grandchildren, Marie Louise Smith and Dale Dean Smith, both of Troup, Texas.

McKeaver


Elizabeth J. McKeaver, 63, of Altus, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton. She was born Dec. 25, 1940 in Axtell, Texas to Charlie and Ida (Thomas) Jackson.

On Jan. 22, 1993, Elizabeth and Elisha McKeaver were united in marriage in Vernon, Texas. She was a very active member of St. Johns Baptist Church in Altus. She sang in the church choir and held the position of Treasurer of the Missionary Women. She was very devoted to her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

McKeaver was preceded in death by her father; two sons; one sister; two brothers; one niece and one nephew.

She is survived by her husband Elisha McKeaver of the home in Altus; her mother, Ida Mae Jackson of Altus; ten children: Harvey Hill and wife Teshawn of Scottsdale, Ariz., Tanisha Massie of Altus, Shawta McKeaver of Altus, Andra McKeaver of Fort Stewart, Ga., Greg McKeaver and wife Jackie of Virginia Beach, Va., David McKeaver and wife Sharice of Barstow, Calif., Mack Bussey and wife Roxanne of San Diego, Terry Wilson and wife Vita of Oxon Hill, Md., Jewell Morrow and husband Wayne of Luxemburg, Germany, and Steve McKeaver of Altus; one sister, Ollie Mae Wilson of Seattle; five brothers: Ralph Jackson and wife Wilma of Altus, Robert Jackson and wife Gwen of Altus, Marion Jackson of Altus, Harry Washington of Weatherford, and Larry Washington of Kentucky; twenty-five grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends.

Sherman


A memorial service for Effie Sherman, 85, of Frederick will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Tesca Baptist Church with Rev. Les Banks, pastor, officiating. Sherman died Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Private family interment will be held prior to the memorial service at the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home.

Sherman was born on Aug. 30, 1918, to William Patrick and Pannie Mae (Pritchard) McDowell in Blossom, Texas. Her family came to Oklahoma at an early age and lived in rural Grandfield. She attended Victory Schools. She was united in marriage to Walter Payton Sherman in February of 1936. He preceded her in death on Oct. 21, 1994. Effie was a large supporter of the youth and youth activities: 4-H and sports, especially basketball. She was a member of the Tesca Baptist Church and previously was a longtime member of the Hollister Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son: Payton Sherman, and wife Donna, of Frederick; four daughters: JoAnn Gober, and husband D.G., of Hobbs, N.M., Barbara Riggan, of Amarillo, Texas, Lynda Simpson, of Ada and Letha Wood, and husband Eldis "Pud", of Ada; eight grandchildren: DeeAnn Barsallo, Donna Smith, Donny Riggan, Jr., Dayle Riggan, Scottie McClure, Shannon Wood, Rob Sherman and Becky Sherman; seven great grandchildren, Deanna Barsallo, Patrick Barsallo, Kara Smith, Marleigh McClure, Mayme McClure, Riley Riggan and Matthew Sherman.

Rev. Claude Alfred (Pete) Tidwell, 91, formerly of Altus, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 in a Midwest City hospital. Tidwell was born Dec. 30, 1912 in Point, Texas. He wa the son of the late John and Maggie (Taylor) Tidwell. Pete moved to the Altus area in 1927 with his parents. He retired from the Altus School System and also pastored several churches in the area. Tidwell served his country during World War II in the Engineer Corps of the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was married to Ruby Goolsby for 65 years before Ruby preceded him in death in 1995.

Tidwell is survived by two sons, James Tidwell and his wife Nancy of Wichita, Kan.; Bill Tidwell and his wife Jody of Newalla; one daughter Loreda Russell of Copperas Cove, Texas; eight grandchildren Mike, Steve, Tammy, David and Dirk Tidwell, and Wayne, Jim and Don Russell; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Oscar Tidwell of Altus; and one sister, Helen Bonds of Altus.

Services for Tidwell are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Altus with the Rev. David Chittenden officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Fondren


Funeral service for Clyde Fondren, 79, of Mannford resident formerly of Frederick, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Gray Gish Funeral Home Chapel in Frederick with the Rev. Royce Couch, pastor, Wichita Baptist Church in Cache and Bob Burch, officiating.

Fondren died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Muskogee. Burial will be at the Fondren family plot in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home.

Fondren was born on March 23, 1924, to John Wesley and Ethel Mae (Hostetler) Fondren in Frederick. He grew up and attended school in Frederick. He served in the United States Army were he was a veteran of World War II, serving his country with distinction in the 3rd Army during the European campaign. Although he was born and raised in Frederick, his work in the aerospace industry took him to Dallas and California for a large part of his working life. He worked for Montgomery Ward towards the end of his career and retired from there in 1992. He moved back to Mannford, in 2001. Pop was the kind of person who made friends wherever he went and he will be sorely missed.

He was a preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: John, Ernest, and twin brother: Clarence Fondren; and three sisters, Marie Rich, Ruth Fondren, and Ethel Matlock.

"Pop" as he was affectionately called by his children, is survived by his sister, Johnnie V. Bond; four sons, Wesley Davis Fondren and his wife, Stephanie, of Huntington Beach, Calif., Phillip Larry Fondren and his wife, Darlene, of Chicago, Terry Lynn Fondren and his wife, Susan, of Cleveland, Okla. and Jack Ray Fondren of Oakland, N.J.; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Lloyd Dolly Copeland, 70, of Altus, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at New Hope Baptist Church. The Reverend Victor West, pastor, will be officiating.

Lloyd Copeland, born unto William and Trudi Mae Copeland on Nov. 23, 1933 in the rural Altus area, died Jan. 14, 2004 in Altus.

Jones


Martha Sue Jones was born July 11, 1929 at Friendship. She was the daughter of the late William Herbert and Ida Emily (Deason) Dunsworth. She died Jan. 13, 2004 in Altus.

Sue was a resident of Altus since 1968. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the First Baptist Church of Altus. Her hobbies included, music, crafts, her dogs and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jones is survived by her husband Bill "Rooster" Jones of Altus; her four children, Mark Weber and his wife Jennifer of Tulsa, Tonia Duncan of Burns Flat, Mike Weber of Oklahoma City and Michale Marcy and her husband Keith; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bill Dunsworth.

Natividad


George L. Natividad, 81, of Altus died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at his home in Altus.

He was born Sept. 3, 1922 in Saragosa, Texas to Eustaquio and Teodora (Lozano) Natividad. He attended Saragosa schools and graduated from high school in 1940. He married Billie L. Morley on Jan. 6, 1942. She preceded him in death. He joined the U.S. Army in November of 1942 and was honorably discharged in February of 1949 as a Corporal.

Natividad worked for the Southwest Rural Electric Coop in Tipton for 35 years, retiring in 1984. He married Betty J. Bevers on Nov. 27, 1982. He also worked for Surplus City for several years following retirement. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and a life member of the VFW Post 4876, serving as Post Commander and District Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed reading, fishing, boating, camping, traveling and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sue Hendrix.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia and Bob Velliquette, Satellite Beach, Fla., Jimi and Randy Coats of Altus, Patty McAlexander of Oklahoma City; son-in-law, Ken Hendrix of Oklahoma City; step children and their spouses include, Reanna and John McCarthy of Kentucky, Terry Jones of Altus, Linda and Bill Burk, Rockwell, Texas, John and Cecellia Hibdon of Barnsdall, Betty Joyce and Ron Johnston, Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Manuel and Balentino Natividad of Saragosa, Ramon and Rachell Natividad, Pecos, Texas; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ausencia Natividad, Jal, N.M., Cecilla and Gafstio Garango of Pecos, Sofia and Locario Gomez, Bamboreha, Texas, Richie Natividad of Pecos; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many friends.

Margaret Mae Colden, age 82, of Elmer, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 in Altus. She was born June 26, 1921 in Marchell, Wis.

She lived a very full life and enjoyed traveling and the great outdoors, you would find her with a fishing pole in her hand. She attended the Elmer Methodist Church.

She is survived by one brother, Richard and Chris Morrison of Waupac, Wis.; and ten children: Harry Kiesow of Altus, Larry Kiesow of Denver, Colo., Dodie Smith of Oakdale, Wis., Mary Fowler of Rockford, Ill., Judy Hawthorne of Elmer, Janet Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., Lucy Navaro of Rockford, Ill., jackie Drone of Elmer, John Colden of Joes, Colo., Jim Colden of Arvada, Colo.; and a host of grand children, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, any many friends and fishing buddies.

Margaret Mae Colden, age 82, of Elmer, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 in Altus. She was born June 26, 1921 in Marchell, Wis.

Lottie Jewell Plew, age 92, died Jan. 11, 2004 at Sienna Care Center in Odessa, Texas. She was born June 22, 1911 to W.J. and Lottie Black. She was the oldest of seven children. She married Guy Plew June 11, 1930; he preceded her in death in 1979. She was a member of Westwood Baptist Church in Odessa. Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Norman Plew, one brother and one sister.

Jewell is survived by her daughter Nadine Pierce of Odessa, Texas; seven grandchildren: Jerry Plew of Bentonville, Ark., Cynthia Pickering of Sterling, Colo.; Steve Plew of Altus; Guy Plew of Wichita Falls, Texas; Belinda Alley of Odessa, Texas; Charlotte Lyons of Odessa, Texas; Kim Pierce of Odessa, Texas; eleven great-grandchildren; four brothers: O.W. Black of Horatio, Ark., Conan and Delmus Black both of Magnolia, Ark. and Denman Black of Waldo, Ark.

Services will be held at10 a.m.,Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Chapel with Brother Denver McGuire officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Mangum under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Conger


Matthew Guy Conger of Flower Mound, Texas died Jan. 12, 2004 at home with his loved ones. He lived a courageous life following the diagnosis of a brain tumor. He was born May 9, 1968, in Sheridan, Wyo. The family lived in Wyo., Gaylord, Mich., Yukon and Houston, Texas. He graduated from Nimitz High School in Houston in 1986. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Texas A&M and North Texas University, where he received a degree in chemistry. He was employed by Hempel Coating USA of Conroe, Texas as a polymer chemist.

He is survived by his parents, Miller and Marjorie Conger; his grandmother Verna Conger of Olustee; his three sisters: Marla R. Conger and her husband Mansour Baranpourian and his niece Jasmine and nephew Ramin of Flower Mound, Micki Lacker and husband Peter Lacker and niece Katie of Dallas and Marie Murphy and husband Joe Murphy and niece Sara of Gresham, Ore.; his uncle Don Conger and his wife Etta Conger of Friendship; his aunt Jean Brown of Sapulpa; his brother in heart Doug Stokley of Conroe; extended family in Okla., Texas and Mass. and his many loyal and trusted friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, J.C. Conger, in 1983.

He was a man of honor and humor, and he loved to write. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at Trisch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound.

Vernell Tabor Birdwell, 80, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 in Oklahoma City at Integris Baptist Medical Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 in the Stewart Funeral Home Chapel in Hollis with Tom Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at the Dryden Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stewart Funeral Service.

Birdwell was born on the family farm northeast of Hollis in the Dryden Community June 14, 1923 to John Ross and Nancy Aurora Dill Tabor. She graduated in 1942 from Ron High School, where she played basketball. She attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford and worked at the Hollis Cotton Oil Mill in Hollis and Fretwell Motors in Oklahoma City, before returning to Hollis to help on the family farm after her brothers were killed in World War II.

She married Willard Garvin Birdwell and moved to Stillwater and then to Ponca City, where she graduated from a business college. In 1960 Birdwell and her daughter returned to Hollis, where she worked at the Hollis Cotton Oil Mill until her retirement in 2000. She always enjoyed outdoor activities and was very active until the later years of her life.

Birdwell was preceded in death by her father, John Ross Tabor, in 1960; her mother, Nancy Aurora Dill Tabor, in 1977; her brothers, Woodrow Tabor in 1945 and J.R. Tabor in 1944; and her sisters, Ola Mae Tabor Carter in 1996 and Allora Tabor Hubbard in 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Birdwell Campbell of Altus; a sister, Althea Tabor Byrd of Hollis; a granddaughter, Leah Campbell Flores and her husband Joe Flores, of Altus; eight nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
