LAWTON -- A Comanche man who was wounded during a shootout with police earlier this month has died, authorities said.
Kyle Anthony Wood, 30, died Tuesday from injuries he received Feb. 13, said Jessica Brown, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman.
His death closes the book on the fatal shooting of Jeremiah Allen Battiest of Marlow, Stephens County Assistant District Attorney Jerry Herberger said Wednesday.
Authorities believe Wood shot Battiest and dumped his body near Empire before forcing a man at gunpoint to give him his vehicle and leading officers on a chase.
Wood and Battiest were friends, investigators believe.
Law officers began pursuing Wood's vehicle after learning of a pickup truck that was stolen at gunpoint in Wynnewood.
The chase ended about 6 a.m. on Oklahoma 29 near Lake Fuqua. Wood emerged from the vehicle with a rifle and was shot by police.
He was taken to a Duncan hospital and then flown by helicopter to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Investigators believe Wood was in Duncan that night with his wife, whom he allegedly beat. Investigators believe Wood forced the woman, who initially was thought to be his girlfriend, out to a vehicle where Battiest was waiting.
The woman was driving the vehicle and Battiest was in the front seat when he was shot, investigators had said.
Herberger said the investigation is completed and the case is considered closed.
