An Altus man was arrested after shots were reportedly fired near Ridgecrest and South Main in Altus at 6:48 p.m. Sunday.

An officer stopped a man in burgundy vehicle traveling in the 100 block of W. Ridgecrest. A .380 caliber automatic pistol was found under the driver's seat with a magazine of ammunition. The man identified himself as Nathaniel Woods.

A search of that name showed a prior felony conviction for Woods and the man was booked into Jackson County Jail for possession of a firearm by a felon. When police began fingerprinting the man, he admitted he was Alfred Lynn Hawkins. Hawkins also has a prior felony conviction, but he also has a suspended license. Woods is Hawkins' brother-in-law

Hawkins is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, false personation and driving with a suspended license
