A vehicle heading east on the highway traveled left of the center line and collided with a car about 4:10 p.m. just west of Poteau in LeFlore County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
Troopers aren't sure why one vehicle went left of center. There was light rain falling at the time, according to the report.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, 15-year-old Emily Bibee, of Fort Worth, Texas, suffered multiple injuries and was admitted to an Arkansas hospital.
Her mother, 39-year-old Derida K. Desoto, and 20-year-old Cole Anthony Brockett, also of Fort Worth, were pronounced dead at the scene of massive injuries, troopers said.
Paden McMeans, 16, also of Fort Worth, suffered minor scrapes and abrasions and was admitted to Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center for observation.
Joy Laverne Devall, the 82-year-old driver of the other vehicle, and passengers Loy May and Lester Monroe Doughty also died at the scene, the patrol said.
Devall, Doughty, a 72-year-old Talihina resident, and May, a 66-year-old resident of Tuskahoma, suffered massive injuries.
Occupants in both cars were pinned in the wreckage from 35 minutes to about an hour, the patrol said.
Only Bibee, Devall and May were wearing seat belts, troopers said.
