FREDERICK -- Murder charges have been filed in connection with the recent death of a 2-year-old girl.

Carlos Torrez, Jr., 18, of Frederick was charged with first-degree murder after investigation into the death of the girl, who reportedly was the daughter of Torrez' girlfriend.

According to the medical examiner's report, the baby girl had a five-inch fracture to her skull.

The incident happened Feb. 15, when the girl's mother reportedly left the child with Torrez and was gone for about an hour.

A passerby reportedly called emergency crews after seeing a frantic Torrez in the yard holding the baby. Paramedics said the baby was unresponsive at the scene and died later in the hospital.

The death was not originally ruled a homicide but suspicious law enforcement authorities reportedly pushed for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
