The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and Jackson County Sheriff's Department are investigating the death of 35-year-old Steven Scott Wert whose body was discovered Thursday night on the side of the roadway on South Park Lane about a quarter mile south of Ridgecrest Road.

Wert's driver's license listed a Frederick address. He died of a gunshot wound, said Sheriff Morris Roberts and OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown. Next of kin have been notified. Roberts said the death was being investigated as a homicide.

The body was discovered by a passing motorist at about 9:30 p.m., Roberts said. The motorist had passed by the same location a half hour earlier but had not seen a body there at that time, Roberts said. The motorist called 911, and the Sheriff's Department responded. The crime scene was secured and OSBI was called in to investigate, the sheriff said.

Wert's body was taken to Oklahoma City by Lowell-Tims Funeral Home for examination, Roberts said.
