They committed five errors in the opening round of the tournament and lost to the Guthrie Blue Jays, 12-10. Then they made seven miscues in a loser's bracket game against Oklahoma City Northwest Classen and lost 6-5 to the Comets.
It was simply a comedy of errors, which included many base running mistakes.
Altus actually jumped on top of Guthrie, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring double by Moose Wathen an RBI single by Logan Childers. The Bulldogs could have done more damage. They had runners on second and third with one out, however Matt Meier struck out and Ben Hayes grounded out to end the inning.
It was the bottom of the first when Altus' defensive problems began. They committed two errors and Guthrie starting pitcher Brent Hodge delivered a solo home run that allow the Blue Jays to score two runs and tie the game.
Guthrie scored three in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth one in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Altus crossed the plate twice in the second with Jake Babcock coming up with a big hit, a run-scoring double. The Bulldogs got one in the third when Meier ripped a home run over the fence in left field. Altus added three more in the fifth thanks to three Blue Jay errors.
The Bulldogs trailed 12-8 and almost made a miraculous comeback. With two out and no one on base, Tomas Sanchez walked and Bucky Buxton singled.
After the runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Kyle Denton singled to score two runs. Denton moved to second on a throw back into the infield and took third on an infield hit by Wathen. Wathen then stole second and that put the potential tying run in scoring position . The game ended when Babcock flew out to centerfield.
The five errors gave Guthrie five unearned runs. Three other Blue Jays who scored got on base by a walk.
Altus collected 12 hits in the game, but that was not enough to overcome the defense. Childers, Cody Young and Kyle Denton each had two hits.
The game was long drawn out affair that included 295 pitches.
Against Classen, things got even worse for the Bulldogs. Altus committed seven errors that led to four runs. The Bulldogs also made several base running mistakes that cost them a chance to score more.
Altus' offense was nearly non existent for the first five innings. Up until that point, Ben Hayes' RBI triple in the second inning was the only bright spot for the Bulldogs.
Trailing 4-1, Altus came to life in the bottom of the sixth. Singles by Babcock, Young, and Buxton keyed a two-run rally that cut the deficit to 4-3. But, it could have been much better. With one out, Sanchez singled and Buxton tried to score from second base. However, he tripped and that caused him to be thrown out at the plate. Sanchez rounded first base too far and was picked off by Classen catcher Kenneth Clark to end the inning.
Classen pushed across two insurance runs in the top of the seventh due to three Altus errors.
The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Denton was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Wathen. Babcock flew out and Childers followed with a double to score Wathen. That brought up Young with the tying run at second. Young grounded to Classen third baseman Nathan Settle who made the throw to first for the third out to end the game.
Altus finished its season with a 14-14 mark.
