A Wellington, Kan., man died Sunday afternoon when his car ran off the roadway on U.S. Highway 183 about a mile north of Hobart.

According to a Highway Patrol report, Raymond Marion Swygert, 71, was headed south in a 1998 Toyota Corolla north of Hobart in Kiowa County when the car went off the roadway to the right, struck a culvert and went airborne for 59 feet before it flipped 11/2 times and came to rest on its top.

Swygert, the report said, was partially thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene from head trauma.

The airbags were deployed, however Swygert was not using a seatbelt.

The accident is under investigation.
