Amanda George has been chosen the Altus ambassador for tourism promotion for 2004 by the Altus Chamber of Commerce. She will begin the drive Monday.
Funds raised through this special campaign are used to promote the Altus area. The drive will run through August.
New tourism projects developing in Southwest Oklahoma show much promise. Quartz Mountain Arts and Conference Center and Nature Park, Twin Peaks Performance Hall, Hackberry Flats Wetland Restoration Project near Frederick the Great Plains Historical Trail, marking of the Great Western Cattle Trail and the national park at Cheyenne are just a few of the attractions that draw visitors.
Amanda George is the 18-year-old daughter of Goebel and Sally George. She graduated from Altus High School in May. She was president of the junior and senior class and served on the student council through high school.
Amanda was listed on the superintendent's honor roll throughout high school. She was active in cheerleading and as a member of Future Farmers of America showed various animals in the local show and Jackson County Junior Livestock Show. She was a representative to Girl's State her junior year and was selected councilman, vice mayor and state representative.
She was a Project 540 Leader and participated on the diving team during high school.
She also was an Altus Rotary Club Junior Rotarian her senior year. Amanda will attend Western Oklahoma State College.
