Herb Henderson, 82, died after a lengthy illness Monday, June 28, 2004, in Elk City, Oklahoma. He was born on August 29, 1921 in Elk City, Oklahoma to J.T. and Olive (Traylor) Henderson. Herb grew up in Elk City and attended school there. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. When he returned home, he worked for the Fairmont Milk Company in Altus. He then bought a milk route in Hobart that he ran for several years. Herb married Louise Hood on July 3, 1959 in Hobart. He was undersheriff for Bob McClung and then he was elected sheriff in 1970 and retired in 1984. Herb served as Mayor of Hobart from 1987 to 1991. He was a member of the Masons and the V.F.W.
Survivors include his wife Louise of the home; two sons, Lance Henderson of Sayre and Tommy Henderson of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Donna Marie Shugart and husband John of Oklahoma City; and one grand-daughter Rebekah Marie Shugart of Oklahoma City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister and one son, Jerry.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Hobart, Oklahoma. The minister officiating will be Rev. Tommy Clark, pastor.
Burial to follow in the Hobart Rose Cemetery under the direction of the Hackney-Gish Funeral Home of Hobart.
